When I was a child, my mother made good bread. That was back in the fifties and sixties when women were expected to have careers and not just stay at home and raise their children. She would bake the bread and use her recipes for everything from cakes to bread rolls to Grandma’s cookies. They were very popular then, but now, many people don’t even know about them.
Grandma’s Cookies Are Easy To Make
One nice thing about these cookies is that they are easy to make. You can find plenty of recipes at your local bookstore or on the internet. They come with instructions and can be followed by just about anyone.
The first step in making bread cookies is to get a baking pan large enough to hold the number of cookies you plan to make. You will need to fill the pan with about an inch of water, which will help to prevent the cookies from sticking to the pan. You will also need to brush the surface of the baking pan with butter before putting the mixture into it.
Get All Your Mixtures Ready
To begin the filling process, take one cup of white oatmeal and combine it with three-quarters of a cup of sugar. If the dough seems too dry or crumbly, add some flour to the mix. Pour this mixture into the prepared baking pan and cover with plastic wrap.
Once you have added the ingredients, you have covered a long way in baking and are ready to start rolling out the dough. Make a well in the center of the dough and roll it into a circle. If you have any flour in the dough, it will need to be sprinkled on the surface of the dough to prevent sticking.
Lay the dough on the work surface with the longer side up and roll it out until it is about two inches wide. Cut the dough along the cut line, be careful not to cut right through the long side of the dough. Continue to cut the dough in this manner until you have made about six to eight cookies.
You can now use the remaining two cups of white sugar to dust the tops of the cookies. The cookies should be covered with this and then immediately covered with plastic wrap.
Time To Make The Glaze: Grandma’s Cookies
Place the baking pan in the freezer while you make the glaze. You will need to blend together two egg yolks and two tablespoons of light corn syrup in a saucepan until thickened.
Next in making grandma’s cookies is you have to place the bowl over the saucepan and allow the mixture to cook for about five minutes. Use a rubber spatula to scrape the bottom of the saucepan and remove any bits of lumps of the egg mixture. Return the mixture to the saucepan and stir gently, so the corn syrup does not burn.
Keep the glaze on the frozen cookies, and allow them to sit for about twenty minutes until they are completely cool. To decorate the cookies, use a piping bag with a large star tip. Pipe the pattern of the stars that you desire on the surface of the cookies.
Baking Is Overall Fun
Making grandma cookies can be fun. It makes you appreciate all the different kinds of cakes and pastries that were once available and gives you a sense of pride in knowing that you made something that your grandmother enjoyed.
It brings a smile to my gramps’s soul when he tastes my handiwork. It’s also a nice way to begin a new chapter in our friendship. I look forward to cooking for him every time that we go out for dinner.
